Affirmations for Women: How to and Why They Work

What people don’t know about affirmations is that they’re already doing them. That’s right, you’re already doing it! We affirm things all the time without even knowing it. We are constantly affirming things, whether it be in conversation or in the thoughts we have to ourselves.

Affirmations for women are used by proudly stating what we want with the full intention that it is already ours. My favorite way to use affirmations is through visual reminders in the form of post-it notes around my desk or in my mirror.

For those who don’t believe that this works, it is actually backed by science. There is proof that words and thoughts have power over our life experiences.

Affirmations vs. Mantras vs. Manifestations

Here’s a quick breakdown between affirmations, mantras, and manifestations.

Mantras are verbal sounds used to connect with the universe. They’re meant to help keep you in the same vibration as the universe.

Whereas, an affirmation is when you state something as if it is already true. Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts.

You can make an affirmation a mantra. An example of this is, “My life is getting better and better every day, in every way.”

Manifestation is used to make your dreams come true. It’s the act of visualizing your desires and dreams and harnessing the power of the universe and imagination to make it a reality.

So, in short, manifesting is about visualizing your dreams, affirmations are about knowing they’re already a reality, and mantras are about connecting those dreams to the universe with sounds and vibrations.

It’s Not a Trick It’s a Belief

When it comes to affirmations for women, it is not about tricking yourself into wishful thinking.

As an example, if saying, “I am rich beyond belief”, makes you cringe because you know you have bills to pay, try taking a step back. Instead, say “abundance is on its way to me”. This allows you to affirm it while allowing room for the logistical process.

In the Essence article written by Kimberly Wilson,  2021 Affirmations For Grown Ass Black Women, affirmations guru Toni Jones touches on the importance of creating affirmations that resonates.

“We can’t just use affirmations in a wishful manner or in a heady hollow practice but in a feeling manner that is in integrity with your logical and physical mind.”-Toni Jones

Affirmations for women should feel right and true and sometimes affirmations is acknowledging your past tendencies of self doubt or negativity can help it resonate.  An example of this is, “I am no longer turning my back on my own wants and needs.”

Toni Jones, the creator of “Affirmations For The Grown Ass Woman state,

“See the key here is to be mindful of how the ego likes to put aspirations and desires into a far away fantasy land so you can maintain the separation consciousness of the good you deserve in life. In order to overcome disempowering habits, you must be gentle with how we have been subconsciously  sabotaging ourselves via our past disappointments.”-Toni Jones

By practicing daily affirmations for women, you are strengthening your mind’s ability to overcome negative thoughts and reinforcing the truth that you are worthy and deserving of all your desires and wants. Affirmations  allow you to speak life into what you want and feel the excitement of creating your own destiny.

Affirmations for Black Women

As a Black woman, I know how important affirmations are for my self-love.  Within the black community, Self-love is not talked about nearly enough. Furthermore, labels such as strong and resistance have been given to black women not out of our own wills but because it was forced on us since birth due to generations of mistreatment. We’ve had no choice but to be anything else.

Despite this, black Women are more than their strength and more than their ability to withstand the abuse, trauma, and pain that has been inflicted upon them. For this reason, affirmations for Black women are how we heal, end toxic cycles and break generational curses.

Black women, we too are fragile, and we too hold softness and tenderness. Affirmations for Black women remind us that we deserve that softness and the care we extend to others.  We can create a life built from joy and pleasure, not strength and survival.
